    В учебнике по английскому языку у дочки было задание подготовить презентацию про один из штатов США. Дочка решила сделать презентацию про штат Вашингтон (не путать с городом — столицей Вашингтон). Готовую презентацию даже показали ученикам 8 класса.

    Washington is a state in the northwest of the United States, the 42nd state in the country. The capital is the city of Olympia, the largest city is Seattle. The population is about 7 million people.

    In the north, Washington is bordered by the Canadian province of British Columbia, in the east — with the state of Idaho, in the south — with the state of Oregon. In the west it is washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

    HISTORY OF WASHINGTON D.C.

    In 16 th of July, 1790 Congress of the USA approved the place for future capital. It was a place between two states: Virgin and Maryland, on the Potomac river.

    The project of the city was created by French engineer Pierre-Charles Lanfan.

    In 1814 Washington D.C. was annexed by British army and burned. It was restored later.

    In 1862 slavery was abolished in Washington. And thousands of African Americans came to the city.

    From 1801 till our days Washington D.C. is ruled by Congress of the USA, Mayor and Legislative Council.

    Washington climate is subtropical.

    • Winter is not cold usually (from -3°C to +6°C). However there are frozen sometimes (-12°C) and snows in January-February.
    • Spring is sunny and dry as a rule. It comes in the end of March.
    • Summer is hot and wet. Average degree is around +32°C. Usually hot weather comes in May and runs till September.
    • Autumn is the most beautiful time in Washington. It is warm and rains are not often.

    The Library of Congress The Library of Congress is the largest nathional library in the States. It contains more than 13 million books, more than 19 manuscripsts, including the personal papers of the US presidents. It takes 340 miles of shelves to hold all the books.


    Gefferson memorial This is the Jefferson Memorial built in honour of Thomas Jefferson. Inside is a 19 – foot statue of Thomas Jefferson standing on a 6 – foot pedestal. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson. He was the first President of the United States.


    Lincoln Memorial This is the Lincoln memorial, built in honour of Abraham Lincoln. It was built in the style of classic Greek temple. It has 36 columns. Each column represents the state in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. But the dominant feature of the building is the realistic figure of Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States in 1861.

    Deemed as one of the most stately buildings in the world, it is constructed of Massachusetts marble and Virginia sandstone, with a cast iron dome to complete the building.

    Completed in 1865 by Constantino Brumidi, the Frescoe covers the 4, 664 square feet inside the dome of the Capitol Building.



    The president meets members from the Office of Homeland Security and other White House staff in the Oval Office.

    The State Dining Room is currently used for formal dining.


    Modeled on the Greek Parthenon, the Lincoln Memorial was designed by Henry Bacon and completed in 1922.

    Its 36 columns represent the number of states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s assassination in 1865.


    In the center hall of the structure sits a 19-foot tall statue of Abraham Lincoln.

    The memorial is located at the west end of the Mall on the banks of the Potomac River and is the site of many historical events, such as the Dr. Martin Luther King “I have a dream” speech.
